Email from Sister Harker - November 13th, 2014

Hi Parents,

We finished our first night of Family Life merit badge requirements.  We covered a lot of material together, including the importance of families and your son's role in strengthening yours.  We touched on Expressing Love, Security, Acceptance and Respect, Mutual Trust, Good Relationship and Communication Skills, and Shared Roles and Responsibility within the home.  It was a lot to cover, and the scouts were great at participating and sharing!  We will talk about each of these over the next few months, working on this badge together.

Your scout came home with a Home Duty or Chore List.  It is on card stock because you will need to complete it over the next 13 weeks (approx 3 months!)  Please talk with your son about 6  chores he can do to help in your home, daily and weekly chores, and then expect that he will do them without being asked or coerced.   Boys, remember the rope demonstration?  We don't want to pull you along through this!  This is your achievement.  Parents, please sign this weekly to show your scout did them.  This is a great opportunity to participate in managing your home together.

We will meet again the first week in December.  At that point your scout should have completed 2-3 weeks of chores.
Thank you for being great families and supporting your scouts!

Lara Harker

#1                    ATTENTION:

The Winter Lodge overnighter dates need to be changed!!  I completely spaced the BSA Christmas Tree Recycling fundraiser which will beSaturday Jan. 3rd.  So, I need to know ASAP what scouts/dads/leaders are available to go the following weekend, going up Friday Jan. 9th and returningSaturday Jan. 10th, 2015.  We will be leaving about 4 PM on Friday and returning sometime around 4 PM on Saturday.  This is always a highlight for the scouts every year! The cost is $15/person.  Last year the boys were covered by the budget.  I think that still holds true for this year.  If not, Bishop please let me know.  The dads going were asked to pay for themselves.  The dads going can fill out a tithing slip and designate the purpose in the "other" category on the tithing slip.  Please let me know ASAP if your scout is going or not going and also let me know if there are any dads/leaders that would like to go.  I need to put in our reservations ASAP before there are no more spots available for that weekend.

Thanks for those that have responded.  Below is the roster for those going and I will make the reservations for those that are confirmed.  If you aren't on the list and would like to go, please let me know immediately.  Thank you in advance for your quick response.

Email from Brother Allen - November 3rd, 2014

#1                    For Wednesday Nov. 5th, we will be meeting for Scoutmaster Conferences and Boards of Review at the church @ 7 PM.  Please bring yourScout Handbook and be in your uniform.   Those that are not ready to advance can still have their books updated and a plan to see when they will be ready to advance ranks in the future.  Those that are ready to advance will need to make sure they have the required number of merit badges and more importantly, a total of 6 service hours since their last rank advancement.  So get your service hours if you haven't already done so.  Service is a big part of Scouting and a great habit to develop for the rest of your life.

Email from Brother Allen - October 20th, 2014

Hello Scouts and Parents,

Troop Website:          bsatroop499.blogspot.com.

I've heard from about half of you on the Winter Lodge event. Thank you for that.  For the rest of you that haven't responded yet, I need to get an idea if this time will work for most of the troop or if we should look at a time towards the end of February.  Please respond quickly so I can pick the best time and get the troop reserved before there are no more spots available at the BSA Winter Lodge.  The scouts always love this event! Thank you.

Parents:  I need your feedback ASAP on whether or not your scout would be able to go to the Winter Lodge at the end of the Holiday break.  We would leave Friday Jan. 2nd at about 4 PM and returnSaturday Jan. 3rd at around 4 PMPlease let me know if your scout would be available to go or not available to go ASAP.  Thank you.

#2                    We will not be having scouts Wednesday Oct. 29th because of the Youth Temple Trip scheduled for Saturday Nov. 1st.  Please meet at the church @ 4 PM.  As always, the Temple is a great place to be so make it a priority to attend.  We only get two of these experiences a year now, so please come and enjoy the blessings and spirit of being in The House of the Lord.

#3                    For Wednesday Nov. 5th, we will be meeting for Scoutmaster Conferences and Boards of Review at the church @ 7 PM.  Please bring yourScout Handbook and be in your uniform.   Those that are ready to advance will need to make sure they have the required number of merit badges and more importantly, a total of 6 service hours since their last rank advancement.  So get your service hours if you haven't already done so.  If you helped set up the spook alley for the Ward party, that can be counted towards your service hours.  Service is a big part of Scouting and a great habit to develop for the rest of your life.

Email from Christian - June 24th 2014

Hi Deacons Quorum! This is Christian. I just wanted to remind everyone about my eagle project tomorrow at Forest Home Park. We will be redoing the bleachers and painting them for the upcoming all-star tournament.

I will need helpers there from either 10:00-2:00 or 4:00-8:00 pm. Please bring hammers, crescent wrenches, and circular saws, if you have them. We will be tearing out worn out boards that need to be replaced and installing new ones. We will also be painting the bleachers once we are done with the repairs. The more tools we have, the faster the project will go!

Thanks so much everybody. I can't wait to see you all there tomorrow!

Email from Bro. Allen - June 15th

Thanks to all the dads that helped out at the campout.  It was much appreciated and I think all the scouts that were able to attend had a fun time and learned a little more about cooking camp food and building camp fires and exploring creeks and watching for slippery mossy logs.

#1            We are meeting this Wednesday (6/18/14) at the church at 7 PM.  We will starting the Citizenship in the World merit badge with Bro. Geigenmiller.  This merit badge is required for Eagle.  Attached is the worksheet for this merit badge.  Please print it out and bring it with you.  Bro. Criddle, the 11 year olds are welcome to join us for this merit badge.  Please pass this email on to them.  Thank you.

#2            Reminder about having your BSA Medical Forms turned into me by June 30th.  You need these physicals on the BSA Medical Forms to be able to attend Scoutcamp.  Parents fill out Parts A & B.  Physician fills out Part C.  I have attached the forms in case you need them.

#3            I need to know if any dad's and/or leaders are planning on going to scoutcamp with us at Camp Baldwin.  I have to have a roster and they need to know names and contact numbers for all those planning on going up to Camp Baldwin.  Scoutcamp is July 14-19.  We will be leaving around 4 AM on that Monday and returning sometime Saturday about 1 PM.  We shouldn't have to worry about 2-deep leadership as we are camping with another troop and should have 2 adults there the entire week.  If you would like to come you are welcome.  I would like to keep the week balanced with dads/leaders that are planning on coming.  I will be there the entire week.  Bro. Jensen and Bro. Giel will be coming in on Wednesday and staying until Saturday to help bring home scouts from camp.  Hopefully they have a vehicle that can transport the scouts back.  I will need another transporter on Monday morning as my Suburban has the capacity to carry 8 passengers so I can carry an additional 7 in my vehicle.  The other vehicle(s) will need to carry the rest of the scouts which should be 6.  We have 13 scouts going.  The cost breakdown for adults is as follows:  $140 if staying the entire week.  $25 for every night that you stay.  Day only visits are $5 for breakfast, $6 for lunch and $7 for dinner.  Adult visitors will need to check-in apon arrival and can pay there cost at that time.  They will also have to have their appropriate medical forms at that time or better yet, turn the medical forms into me before we go up on that Monday morning.  If you are staying overnight you need Parts A & B of the BSA Medical form filled out.  If you are planning on staying 3 nights or more Part C must also be filled out by your physician.  The forms are attached.  I need to know ASAP on your plans for attending.  Thank you.

#4            I am attaching a guideline of what to bring and what not to bring to Camp Baldwin.  Please take a look at the items so that you can be more prepared for scoutcamp.  I am also recommending that everyone takes the Horsemanship merit badge as this is the only camp that offers that merit badge.  The Horsemanship merit badge does cost $18 additional.  Also, the overnight Horse ride is very popular but also costs an additional $14.  Below are some of the other additional costs involved at Camp Baldwin.  I have also listed 2 possible schedules depending if this is the scouts 1st summer camp or their second.  These schedules can be modified depending on what the scout needs or wants to take at Camp Baldwin.  These suggested schedules include all of the required merit badges for Eagle that Baldwin offers except for Horsemanship.

1st Time at Scoutcamp                             2nd Time at Scoutcamp

9:00        Horsemanship                            9:00              Cooking
10:00      Cooking                                     10:00 - 12      Lifesaving
11:00      Swimming
2:00        Environmental Science              2:00              Horsemanship
3:00        Camping                                      3:00              Camping
4:00        First Aid                                        4:00              Merit Badge (non required)
